Emmaus House Christmas offers opportunities for many to participate

by The Rev. E. Claiborne Jones, Vicar

The Emmaus House Christmas Ministry gives many of us incredible and wonderful opportunities to serve others during the season of Christmas. We are offering an opportunity of partnership for you, your company, or your group with a family in the Emmaus House community.

This partnership is an outgrowth of our Christmas Ministry “Adopt-a-Family” program.

During each of the past 3 years, Emmaus House staff and volunteers have provided support for up to 20 families who are experiencing economic challenges. Many of these families, ranging from one to seven or more children, have heads of households who are making minimum wage; some have recently lost their jobs; and others are disabled or simply not able to meet the requirements of the present job market. They all have “daily living” challenges and would benefit greatly from a “partnership” this Christmas. Out “Adopt-a-Family” program emphasizes articles of “daily living” for families: house hold items, (laundry detergent; cleaning supplies; etc.); hygiene supplies (bath soap, shampoo, shaving cream, razors, hand lotion, towels, etc); every day clothing (not unique brands); groceries; and educational toys and school supplies. We encourage gift certificates from Kroger, Target, and Old Navy since these are within an easy MARTA ride for people in the community. We have learned that a gift of $75.00 - $100.00 per member is a wonderful contribution to assist a family along with a gift card for groceries. Gifts can be in the form of gift cards so parents can do their own shopping. Our program is very flexible; if you are interested in a “partnership” with a family, specific information about family members (names, ages, sizes, color preferences, and their “wish list” will be identified for you, your group, or organization. We will work with you regarding the delivery of your gifts. Some individuals prefer to meet their family; others want to remain anonymous. If you feel you cannot support a family on your own, we will attempt to find another partner to join you or you may have friends or neighbors who would be willing to share in the giving. For questions about this program please call Mary Kay Kohles-Baker at cell 404-276-0014/home 404-351-4420 or e-mail mkkb@att.net In accordance with the Internal Revenue Service regulations, we will acknowledge that your gift does not represent payment in exchange for, or in expectation of, monetary or other benefits to be given to you as an individual or organizational contribution, as Emmaus House is recognized as a 501(c)(3) Internal Revenue Service non-profit organization. Peace in this Blessed Season, The Reverend Elizabeth Claiborne Jones Director and Vicar
